Crime Stats

Metropolitan Police services are increasingly stretched and burglaries in the area of Egerton Gardens are on the rise.

Key Stats

In 2017, there were 4 reported burglaries/1 robbery in the Egerton Gardens area, up from 1 burglary/1 robbery in 2016 and none in 2015 (only 1 theft on a person was reported that year). None resulted in any enforcement action. In fact, the sanctions and detection rates for burglaries in Kensington & Chelsea for 2016/17 were very low: 6.65% (8% in 2015/16).

Evidence seems to suggest that majority of burglaries and thefts/robbery in the area are opportunistic rather than targeted / personal. Deterrence is therefore key.

Issues specific to Egerton Gardens: Wide street and close proximity to busy Brompton Road facilitates access and provides easy escape routes.

Perhaps the time is right to employ a bespoke security firm to provide a deterrent by regularly patrolling our neighbourhood?

(Distinction between theft and robbery is use or threat of force/physical threat)

Crime Stats

Q: What is the number of burglaries in the Egerton group of roads and crescents, by year, for the last 10 years?
A: Data going back 3 years (2015-2017) for the Egerton Gardens area:

Reported Crimes – Egerton Gardens Area
Thefts / Attempted Thefts (on the person) Burglaries /Attempted Burglaries Robberies / Attempted Robberies
2015 1 - -
2016 - 1 1
2017 - ? 4 1

Data from 2010 – 2017:

For the years from 2010 – 2017 the Crime Data Dashboard published by the Met divides the Kensington & Chelsea borough into a number of sub-areas with Brompton & Hans Town being the area capturing Egerton Gardens/Crescent. The data specific to residential burglaries is set out below:

Reported Residential Burglaries in Brompton & Hans Town sub-area
2010 79
2011 67
2012 60
2013 69
2014 62
2015 62
2016 79
2017 93

This equates to an average of just over 70 burglaries per year but with a significant increase over the past two years. Interestingly as well, Brompton & Hans Town record the second highest figures in the borough.

No data was available for the years prior to April 2010.

Other points of note

In the year ending September 2017, the burglary rate in Kensington & Chelsea was higher than average for the Metropolitan Police force area. In Kensington & Chelsea for the period ending September 2017 there were 10.42 burglaries per thousand residents, in third position after Westminster (1) and Camden (2) but ahead of Fulham & Hammersmith, Islington, Wandsworth etc.

Office for National Statistics: There is a wealth of data recorded and published by the ONS but it is not sufficiently granular in terms of geographical remit (across England & Wales) to answer the specific questions.

Still, a couple of interesting points to note on domestic burglaries – over the last decade and across England and Wales:

  • Between 1/3 and 2/5 of incidents were unsuccessful attempts.

  • In 70% of the time entry is gained through a door.

  • Purses, wallets and money are typically the most frequently stolen items with jewellery and watches, computer equipment and other electronic goods also being commonly stolen.

  • Around 70% of burglaries take place during the week.

  • Approximately 2/5 of burglaries take place during the morning or afternoon (6 am – 6 pm) and 3/5 during the evening or night (6 pm to 6 am).

  • In over half of incidents where an offender gained entry someone was at home!

Q: How many have been pursued or solved?
A: Between 2015-2017 all reported incidents have been investigated but none have resulted in convictions.

Q: How often do policemen patrol Egerton?
A: The police were unable to specify how often they patrol the area.
